How to draw a pineapple step by step
A pineapple looks complicated because of its pattern, but the shape underneath is simple. Almost every drawing on this page is one tall oval body with a crown of spiky leaves on top, and the criss cross pattern is added last.
- Draw a tall oval for the body. Keep the line light so you can adjust it.
- Add a crown of pointed leaves on top. A few long triangle shapes fanning outward is all you need.
- Draw a light criss cross pattern of diagonal lines across the oval, going in both directions to form small diamond shapes.
- Add a small curved line or dot inside a few of the diamonds if you want extra texture, this step is optional.
- Add any extra details last, whether that is a face, a bow, a plate underneath or a basket around it.
Darken your final lines at the end and rub out the guide shapes. That last step is what makes a drawing look finished rather than sketched.

Three things that make a pineapple look like a pineapple
- The crown is too small. A pineapple crown is tall and noticeable, often close to a third of the total height. A tiny crown makes the fruit hard to recognise.
- The pattern is too even. Real pineapple diamonds are not perfectly uniform. A slightly uneven criss cross pattern actually looks more natural than a precise grid.
- The body is too round. A pineapple body is a tall oval, closer to a cylinder than a ball. A body that is too round looks more like a coconut.
