How to draw a bunny step by step

A bunny is one of the easiest animals to start with, because the whole body comes from two ovals and two long ears. Get the ears right and the rest falls into place.

  1. Draw a circle for the head, kept small compared to the body.
  2. Add the ears. Bunny ears are long and thin, standing straight up or leaning slightly outward. Round off the tips rather than pointing them.
  3. Add a larger oval below the head for the body. For a sitting bunny make it wider at the bottom, almost like a rounded triangle.
  4. Draw two small front paws close to the chest and two back legs tucked at the sides.
  5. Finish with a small round tail at the back. A bunny tail is just one circle, smaller than the head.

Darken your final lines once the shape looks right, then rub out the light guide circles underneath.

Which bunny should you start with

If this is your first bunny

Start with the easy sitting bunny or the bunny lying down. Both face forward with nothing else on the page, so you only have to think about the ears and the body shape.

If you have drawn animals before

Try the bunny holding a balloon, the bunny with a gift box or the bunny wearing a bow. The bunny shape stays simple and you are only adding one small prop.

If you want a challenge

The jumping bunny and the hopping bunny side view are the hardest here, because the whole body stretches into the motion. Draw the curve of the back first and the legs will follow more easily.

What you need

An HB pencil, plain paper and an eraser. A 2B pencil helps for darker final lines. Nothing here needs a tablet or special paper.

Three things that make a bunny look like a bunny

  • The ears are too short. Bunny ears should be about as long as the head and body put together. Short ears start to look like a cat or a mouse.
  • The body is too thin. A bunny body is round and soft looking, not narrow. A thin body makes the drawing look stretched.
  • The back feet are missing. Even in a sitting pose, a bunny shows its long back feet peeking out at the front. Leaving them out makes the pose look unfinished.
