Lotus Drawing Ideas
Fourteen lotus drawings you can copy straight onto paper, from a single bloom on a stem to a full mandala. Every one is a clean pencil outline drawn by hand, with no shading and no colour. Pick one, keep it next to you, and copy it line by line.

How to draw a lotus step by step
A lotus is one of the friendliest flowers to draw, because the petals are wide, rounded and all roughly the same shape. There is no tricky curve to get right and nothing overlaps in a confusing way.
- Draw a shallow cup at the bottom, like a wide letter U. This is the base the petals sit in.
- Add the middle petal standing straight up out of the cup. Make it a pointed oval. Everything else lines up against this one, so take your time with it.
- Add one petal on each side of the middle one, leaning slightly outwards. Keep them the same height as each other.
- Add the outer petals last, leaning out further and sitting a little lower. Let them peek out from behind the front row rather than starting from the same point.
- Draw the stem as one straight line down from the middle of the cup, then add one or two leaves. Lotus leaves are wide flat circles, not pointed.
Darken your final lines at the end and rub out any guide shapes.
Which lotus should you start with
If this is your first lotus
Start with the simple lotus with one leaf or the closed lotus bud. Both have very few lines and no background. The bud is the easiest of all, because the flower has not opened yet.
If you have drawn flowers before
Try the layered lotus bloom, the lotus with a butterfly or the lotus with many petals. The flower stays simple and you are only adding one more element or one more row of petals.
If you want a challenge
The mandala is the most detailed drawing here. The geometric lotus is a different kind of challenge, because everything is straight lines and the angles have to match. The pond scene has the most separate pieces to fit on one page.
What you need
An HB pencil, plain paper and an eraser. A 2B pencil helps for darker final lines, and a compass or a round lid is useful for the mandala if you want the outer circle even. Nothing here needs a tablet or special paper.
Three things that make a lotus look right
- The petals are too narrow. Lotus petals are wide and rounded with a soft point at the tip. Narrow spiky petals turn it into a different flower.
- The back petals start from the same place. Let the outer petals sit lower and peek out from behind the front row. That small gap is what gives the flower depth.
- The leaves are pointed. Lotus leaves are big flat rounds that sit on the water. If you draw pointed leaves it stops looking like a lotus.
Lotus or water lily
They are drawn almost the same way and most people use the names for either. The usual difference is that a lotus stands up on a tall stem above the water, while a water lily floats flat on the surface. The pond drawings on this page show both.
Using these for mandalas and tattoo designs
The mandala circle, the top view lotus and the geometric lotus are the three that get used most often as tattoo references and as colouring pages. All three are symmetrical, so if you fold the paper in half you can check whether both sides match.
Ways to use these drawings

Questions people ask
What is the easiest lotus drawing on this page?
The closed lotus bud on a stem. The flower has not opened yet, so it is only three shapes. The simple lotus with one leaf is the next easiest if you want an open bloom.
Are these lotus drawings free to download?
Yes. Every drawing here can be downloaded and printed for personal use, school use or classroom use at no cost. For commercial use, please contact us first.
What is the difference between a lotus and a water lily?
A lotus stands on a tall stem above the water and has round leaves that also rise above the surface. A water lily floats flat on the water with its leaves lying on the surface. The two are drawn almost identically, and most people use the names for either.
How many petals should a lotus have?
There is no fixed number. Most simple drawings use five to eight visible petals in the front row with a few more peeking out behind. The lotus with many petals on this page uses a full ring, which looks more detailed without being harder.
Can children draw these?
Most of them. The simple lotus, the closed bud, the layered bloom and the row of small lotus flowers are all suitable for children around six and up. The mandala and the geometric lotus suit older children and adults.
Which lotus drawing works best as a tattoo design?
The geometric lotus in triangles, the lotus flower top view and the mandala circle. All three are symmetrical and made of clean lines, which is what most tattoo line art needs.
How do I draw lotus leaves?
Wide flat circles or near circles, not pointed leaf shapes. In a pond drawing they sit on the water with a small notch cut into one side. On a stem they can be drawn as simple ovals.
What pencil should I use?
An HB for the light guide shapes and a 2B for the final lines. If you only have one pencil, an HB is fine. A round lid or a compass helps with the mandala.
Are these drawings made by hand?
Yes. Each one was drawn in pencil on plain paper and photographed. They are not computer generated or traced from photographs.
