Draw the spiky back
Turn your paper sideways. Draw a big half circle for the back, but go around it in zigzags so it looks spiky. Draw a flat line across the bottom. Press lightly so you can fix it later.
▶ Watch this stepThis cartoon hedgehog starts with one big zigzag shape for the spiky back, then you add the face, ear, feet and an apple. Watch each step being drawn in pencil, then copy it on your own paper. It works for kids from about age 5 and for adult beginners too.
Copy the dark lines in each step. The grey lines are the parts you already drew.

On the right side, draw the face over the end of the spikes. It is a soft shape that comes to a point for the nose, like a tear drop lying on its side.
▶ Watch this step
On the face, draw a round eye with a white shine. At the tip of the face, draw a dark round nose. Draw a little smile and a pink oval for the cheek.
▶ Watch this step
On top of the face, near the spikes, draw a small round ear.
▶ Watch this step
On top of the spikes, draw a little round apple with a short stem and a leaf. Under the hedgehog, draw a few pointy blades of grass.
▶ Watch this step
Color the spikes dark brown. Color the face, ear and feet light tan. Color the apple red, the leaf and grass green and the cheek pink. Keep the eye and nose dark.
▶ Watch this stepKeep your first lines soft, then press harder once you like the shape.
Try to keep the spikes about the same size all the way around.
Only the back is spiky. The face and feet are soft and smooth.
Use a darker brown near the edge of the spikes to make them look fuzzy.
Trace your drawing with a darker pencil or a black pen so it stands out after coloring.
Try a mushroom, a leaf or a strawberry on the spikes instead.
